Description
During the meeting, community members and local officials expressed strong frustration over the exclusion of a pedestrian and bicycle path from the MBTA’s Draw One Bridge replacement project. Originally envisioned as part of Big Dig mitigation and cited in the 1995 Charles River Basin master plan, the connection would link North Station to Cambridge Crossing and the regional path network. Many speakers, including representatives from the Cities of Boston and Cambridge, emphasized the path’s critical role in supporting sustainable, multimodal transportation and called for it to be built concurrently with the rail bridge. The MBTA responded that, due to safety and regulatory constraints, the path must be a separate structure and cannot be constructed during the rail project’s active phases—likely delaying it until after the bridge's expected 8+ year construction timeline.
