Description
After passenger service was discontinued on the Woods Hole Branch line in 1964, the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad first petitions MassDOT to abandon the line in 1965. Woods Hole resident Joan Kanwisher learns of this news and writes the railroad to suggest a a bicycle and bridle path. The Railroad is amenable! Joan enlists the support of her neighbor, Barbara Burwell. Mrs. Kanwisher and Mrs. Burwell will act as trail champions for years to come. The coming struggle to build the trail will be the inspiration for Mrs. Burwell's son, David Burwell, to found the Rails to Trails Conservancy.
